Match 50

Game of the Session!!

Forfar Athletic 1-1 Ross County

Skelly’s 85th minute strike for Forfar, coming 2 minutes after the Loons went to Press, earned his side a point and pushed visitors County to the 3rd division. The point they got might well be the difference between themselves being automatically relegated or getting a playoff match to save their 2nd division status. Both teams favoured Long Ball and throughout there weren’t many shots for the keepers to save. The game looked like heading for a 0-0 till 11 minutes from time, at which point a cross from the wing was met by Baldwin’s head and the ball flashed past McCallum2 in the home goal. Then came Skelly’s body blow for County.

      *********************************************

Airdrieonians 4-0 Edinburgh City

The Diamonds condemned City to the 3rd division when they swept them clear off the park today. Without Shilton’s 6 saves the score line could have been a lot worse, and City had no answer to the constant attacking play from their hosts. The home side lead at the break due to a 3rd minute strike from Prince but second half the goals flowed  from Gunn (54), Hancock (59) and Megwa (63) for a convincing win. Airdrieonians will now contest a relegation playoff match next Saturday.

Dunfermline Athletic 2-3 Peterhead

The Pars go down to the 3rd division but went down fighting in a game with 17 on target shots. Probably fighting isn’t the best word as Oakley cost them any chance of salvaging something from the game when he received a straight red card for raised fists in the 71st minute. At that point Peterhead, chasing a playoff spot for promotion were 3-1 up through goals from Gentle (2), Sneaky (20), and Brady (38) which had put them 3 goals up before Chalmers pulled one back 2 minutes from the break. Second half was more even till Oakley’s rush of blood. However the Pars did half the last laugh when Gilmour halved the deficit with 7 minutes left to play.

Arbroath 4-0 Greenock Morton

1st division bound Arbroath were in no mood to gift any points here that could have given their visitors a glimpse of a playoff spt. They dominated the game but only had a 4th minute goal to show for the first half. A Palmer shot was deflected past Den by Taarabt. 8 minutes after the interval Palmer claimed a goal when he shot home. Bizarrely 10 minutes later Niemi, playing as sweeper instead of his usual goalkeeping role, lost his head and received a red card for a bad foul. The 10 men held on best they could but surrendered 2 more goals, both from McIntosh in the 69th and 88th minutes.

Clydebank 2-4 Livingston

The Bankies ran their visitors close as they tried to wrest 2nd place from Arbroath, but Livvie has too much going forward in the end. It looked like a home result was on the cards when Aquero chipped Prior in the Livvie goal on 25 minutes, and that became the half time score line. The travellers swapped some defence for more attack and within 10 minutes of the restart 2 headers from Nouble (53) and Bishop had the away fans in raptures. Gerrard swept in a lovely shot on 63 minutes to make it 3-1, just after the Bankies went to Press, but the home side's hard work was rewarded when McCall headed in on 69 minutes and it became close for a while till Guthrie made the game safe by chipping over Martinez with 6 minutes left to play.

Celtic 3-1 Falkirk

Celtic guaranteed themselves a promotion playoff game next weekend with this win, and at the same time virtually condemning the Bairns to the 3rd division. The Parkhead lads were worth their win but the points were only made safe in the 2nd half. Up till the pie and Bovril (half time) they lead through a 22nd Mooy goal. Kuhn made it 2-0 in the 54th minute at which point the Bairns fought back with Johnstone pulling one back just after the hour mark. Giakoumakis had the final say with 13 minutes left to play when he headed a cross over Gunn’s flailing hands.

Hibernian 6-2 Nairn County

Hibs score 6 for the 2nd time in 3 games as they cement a playoff place at least (and earn their sponsorship cash!!) Nairn might have been well outscored but they created as many on target shots as the home side, and sub keeper Bursik had to save 5 of the 6 2nd half shots he faced to keep the away total down. Home hero was winger James, who hasn’t seen much play time this season but conjured up a hat trick with goals in the 32nd, 63rd and 87th minutes. Youan gave the home side the lead in the 2nd minute only for Isle to square the match in the 26th minute. Youan added his 2nd (and Hibs 3rd) in the 38th minute for a 3-1 interval lead. O’Rourke made it 4-2 on 53 minutes but Ormsby pulled another back 5 minutes later. Then came James last 2 goals to settle the match.

East Fife 4-0 Stranraer

SESL Cup Winners East Fife demolished 4th placed Stranraer with a tremendous attacking display. The borderer’s keeper, Ruthtowner saved 7 further shots in a match that could have got well away from them. As it was the home side settled far more quickly and lead through Shepherd (3) and Brooking (6) before Shepherd finished off his hat trick with counters in the 27th and 56th minutes. The last one came after Lannister had been sent off for a horrendous tackle just a minute before. The Fifers can’t do any more than mid table but automatic promotion can still be Stranraer’s if they draw or beat Hibs in their last game.

Match 51

Highlights:  NONE of the top 5 teams win here!!!

Game of the Session!!

Stranraer 1-1 Hibernian

Very cagey game with honours even in shots and goals. But the point Stranraer took here gives them the 4th automatic promotion slot, whilst Hibs will contest a promotion playoff game next weekend. It looked so different when after only 7 minutes Jickee crossed for Carbon to head past Bursik. At that point the home side were in control. Half time appeared and that was the score line. After the break Hanlon, only on the park for 1 minute, smashed a shot past Ruthtowner and we had a game again. Both sides went for a winner but the borderers held out and go up.

*********************************************

Livingston 0-1 East Fife

Beveridge in the Fifers goal gained the MOM award with his 7 saves, but this was by no means a backs to the wall performance by the away side. They created nearly as many shots as the champions – McCrorie in the home goal had to make 5 saves of his own – and they battled away despite the attacking stats the home side had on the park at the start of the 2nd half. The goal that decided the points came in the 68th minute when a Cunningham lob over Walkers head allowed Ross to scamper clear and lash the ball past McCrorie. Game was worth a draw but Livvie are promoted, and are champions, and East Fife finish with a 6 pointer today.

Ross County 1-3 Nairn County

Nairn ended their campaign with an excellent away win in Dingwall over an already relegated Ross side. They dominated the play throughout and the home team scored from one of their only two on target shots, a Kelly strike a minute after the restart. This levelled Ormsby’s goal scored for Nairn just 2 minutes before the referee called for half time. However Young (64) and Rice (76) gave the score line a more realistic look based on the 9-2 shots advantage Nairn had. Laidlaw made 6 saves for Ross in this game.

Edinburgh City 3-1 Arbroath

14th played 2nd and City, already down, played out of their skins to record their best win of the season. Arbroath could not finish higher than 2nd and knew the Bankies couldn’t pass them into 2nd place but even so both teams put out a decent lineup each. The sides largely cancelled each other out as only 5 on target shots were created, with 4 of them counting. Mackay fired in a deflection past McAdams in the 17th minute for a home lead. On the half hour mark Norey nodded the ball down for McIntosh to slip the ball over the onrushing Shilton in the home goal. It took only 4 minutes before Brady slipped the ball over for McAvennie to head past McAdams to restore the home lead. It was another Brady pass through to McAvennie in the 58th minute and City were home and dry. Not much action after that and the home side will take some comfort from this performance.

Celtic 4-0 Airdrieonians

Airdrie came to sit back and admire the home team attacking them for the 90 minutes by playing a 90 minute stall. Celtic obliged and constantly asked questions of the away defence. All 4 goals were scored in the 1st half and Oh claimed a hat trick with his strikes in the 19th, 36th and 38th minutes. The opening goal came as early as the 3rd minute when Haka claimed it. Airdrie rested for this one, knowing they have a playoff match next weekend. Celtic tried hard to make 5th place and just lost out to Hibs by 4 goals on goal difference. However both clubs will be in a playoff game.

Greenock Morton 2-4 Dunfermline Athletic

Dunfermline finish their bad season with a flourish and at the same time end what has become a horrendous second half of the league season for the hosts. Morton could claim only 2 wins in their 15 matches despite having a fair squad. The Pars though won here but will play a division down next season – likely to come back though pretty quickly. The Greenock side started with a lesser strength – giving time to a few low EL lads, and the Pars made them suffer for it. The away side hit Morton with a 4 goal blast inside the first 20 minutes before a couple of timely substitutions settled the home team down. 2 goals from May (1 & 15) added to a strike from Dey (9), and the scoring spree was finished by Gilmour in the 19th minute. 2 goals from Wall in the 65th and 68th minutes gave the home support some hope of a miracle comeback but it wasn’t to be, and the Pars saw the remaining time out safely. Both teams will re-group for next season.

Falkirk 1-1 Clydebank

The Bairns needed to win this one to stand any chance of avoiding an automatic relegation, but in an evenly balanced encounter a draw was probably the correct result. The Bankies have their promotion and had little chance of getting higher than 3rd, so it turned out to be a keenly fought contest between 2 evenly matched sides on the day. Bankies went into the lead through Millar in the 16th minute. Falkirk were reduced to 10 men in the 29th minute when Morrison fouled Millar in the box and was sent off. Millar took the kick but Gunn kept his side in the game with a fine save.  A Ferguson pass to Gemmell in the 33rd minute ended with the ball nestling behind Martinez for the equaliser. Second half was competitive but with no decider.

Peterhead 3-1 Forfar Athletic

McCallum2 had another tremendous day in goals for Forfar but even his 7 saves couldn’t stop the pummelling his defence took throughout the game. The home side will finish mid table but the Loons will face a relegation playoff game next week. Sneaky (Peterhead) was the only scorer in the 1st half, and Brady made it 2-0 just before the hour mark. With 19 minutes left Forfar gave their supporters something to cheer when a MacLeod cross to Hutchison pulled a goal back. At that point the home side went to Stall, but when Forfar went to Press for the last 7 minutes the space they gave up allowed Smith an easy tap in goal 3 minutes later.

27 goals scored here – 37 were scored in the previous session

Summary:  6 points today for Celtic, Peterhead, East Fife  - Zero points for Greenock Morton

Hat tricks today for Shepherd (East Fife), James (Hibs) and Oh (Celtic)- and red cards for Niemi (Greenock Morton), Oakley (Dunfermline Athletic), Morrison (Falkirk), and Lannister (Stranraer)

McIntosh (29) and Norey (20) – both Arbroath - and Idah (Celtic) 20 are the Top 3 in the goal scoring charts.

Match 50

And so to the last Saturday of the season with all eyes on the battle for promotion.   Second-placed Queen of the South travelled to Links Park to meet fourth-placed Montrose.  The Doonhammers could guarantee themselves promotion with a. win here, but they arrived with a defence that looked a little thin, while Montrose looked to exploit that with Early Cross tactics, though perhaps lacking the quality wingers to make that tactic effective.  The visitors took the lead after only five minutes, a brilliant effort from Billy Nicholl, and they continued to hold the lead going in at half time.  James White beefed up his attack with the introduction of Danilo and he made it 1-1 with half an hour to go with a powerful drive.  Now Arnold Yzermans made a key change, bringing Tommy Flanagan into the front line and his first touch was a cool side-foot into the Montrose net.  Aaran Stramash sealed the 1-3 win for the Doonhammers ten minutes later to book their place in Division 2.

A win for Brechin City would also promote them but they faced champions Elgin City.  And strangely, Fran Morillo didn’t seem that focussed, as he included two suspended players in his starting lineup.  The two enforced substitutions left his defence in a sorry state, but somehow they held things steady and Fran must have been delighted to see his team taking the lead after 28 minutes after a goalkeeping error by Kyle King.  The lead lasted only one minute, however, and seven minutes after that Elgin were in front – Matty Wright and Mitchell Taylor scoring for the champions.  Elgin continued to dominate in the second half and added a third goal.  The only blot for them was a late red card for Mitch Pinnock but that won’t spoil the celebrations, I’m sure.

This result gave Annan Athletic the chance to move into the top four if they could win their home tie against Deveronvale, who, on this occasion, decided to abandon their usual Early Cross tactics in favour of Normal.  Annan looked the classier side but class alone doesn’t win matches and after a goalless first half it was the visitors who took the lead via a thunderous stroke from Gabriel Batistuta.  The big home crowd rather lost heart at this, and when, with all three subs already used, Ever Rest was injured, and the Athletic were forced to play  the last half hour with ten men,  many of the crowd started to drift away.  They missed a neat second goal from the visitors just before the end which will most likely leave Annan facing a playoff match next Saturday.

The second playoff spot is still up for grabs, with Cove Rangers in pole position.  They had a home game against Queens Park.  It was a game they were hot favourites to win, but they weren’t really firing on all cylinders and their visitors largely nullified their attacking efforts.  After a goalless first half, Cove became frustrated and seemed gradually to lose belief, and Bryce Kalmbach saw his chance.  With fifteen minutes to go, he ordered his team to press and with two minutes left James Taverner broke through from defence and fired in the only goal of the match, 0-1 to Queens Park!

This gave Stirling the chance to get one hand on the second playoff spot when they visited Dundee United.  Three minutes into the match they had taken that chance, and how, with two early goals.  Roy Rolsten now made the rather strange decision to switch to Opportunistic tactics – a decision that saw the Tangerine Arabs score almost immediately to reduce the deficit to 1-2.   Eight minutes gone, three goals scored, and eight minutes later the tally was up to four when Alexander Graham Bell extended the Binos’ lead to 1-3.  It had all been a bit frenetic, but the rest of the first half produced no more goals.  The second started as the first had – an early goal for Dundee United when Ryan Strain found himself unmarked in the box with the ball at his feet but from here Stirling calmed things down and held on to a 2-3 win that gives them an excellent chance of a playoff spot.

The only other team in with a chance of a playoff was Kilmarnock, who would now need a win at Somerset Park against Ayr United to keep that hope faintly alive.  The Ayrshire Derby attracted a big home crowd, but got off to a rather dull start with a goalless, and almost chanceless, first half.  Things livened up a little after the interval, with most of the play going to the Honest Men.  They scored the only two goals of the match, Joe Willock and Josh Mullin doing the business for them.  Let’s hop that next season’s meetings between these clubs have a little more life about them.

The Wooden Spoon is not yet decided and the bottom two, Berwick and Partick Thistle met each other at Shielfield Park.  It’s been a long season and the Jags in particular looked rather tired, with Marc Legowski deciding that Long Ball tactics would at least give his midfielders a bit of a rest.  Berwick looked a better team than their league position suggests and just after the half hour they took the lead when D_Roberts slotted into a vacant net.  Derek Purvis brought on a couple of subs and switch to Counter Attack and soon the BER extended their lead after a lovely run from D_Bonner set up M_Ryder.  The Jags managed a goal of their own with eleven minutes to go but that was all they could manage, meaning that Berwick could yet avoid the Wooden Spoon.

If everything goes wrong for them, Saint Mirren could yet grab that uncoveted trophy, and things did not go right for them at Ochilview Park against East Stirlingshire.  There wasn’t much to choose between the teams, but the Shire took their chances – or perhaps it was more that Nigel Spink failed to save them.  The home team scored three times from four on-target shots to pull themselves clear of the bottom three.

Match 51

One automatic promotion spot was still up for grabs, would Montrose or Annan take it?  The situation was that Annan needed a win – and if they managed that, Montrose would also need to win to keep fourth place in the table.  So let’s look first at Brechin City v Annan Athletic.  Already promoted, Brechin went for a defensive lineup, 4-5-1, while Annan fielded the stronger team in a 4-3-3 formation.  Brechin looked as if the promotion party had been going on for a while and they didn’t put up much of a showing here.  Annan netted three times in the first half and Mownt Taranaki completed a hat-trick in the second half as the visitors romped home, 0-4.

So Montrose needed to win their match at Stirling, for whom a draw would be enough to guarantee a play-off spot.  Roy Rolsten lined his men up with their usual Ball Control tactics in a cautious 4-5-1 formation, while James White abandoned the midfield completely, playing 4-2-4 and Early Cross.  The ground was packed with home supporters, who were delighted to see their team go ahead after a quarter of an hour when Raymond Tango slipped the ball home from close range.  Montrose were energised by this setback and as half time approached, Danilo beat the offside trap and fired home to square things up at 1-1.  Into the second half, and James White brought on Dessers to give more fire power but once again it was Stirling who struck first when a lovely passing movement led to a clean finish from Alexander Graham Bell.  Montrose refused to give up, creating a number of chances before Dessers equalised for them to make it 2-2 with seventeen minutes to go.  There were a couple of half chances left for them, but they couldn’t convert and the final score of 2-2 means that it will be these two teams who take the playoff places.

The remaining question was whether Berwick could avoid the wooden spoon, but to do so they would have to beat the champions, Elgin City, at Borough Briggs.  To their credit, they gave it a good effort, but the gulf between the sides was just too much.  Don Henley opened the scoring after a quarter of an hour, and exactly on the half hour, Mitchell Taylor made it 2-0.  By half time it was 3-0 to Elgin and Derek Purvis switched to a Counter Attacking style.  That was better, and the second half yielded two goals for each side, but the champions were never troubled in this 5-2 victory.

There were a couple of 0-0 draws, unsurprising with little left to play for.  Partick Thistle and Dundee United were both languishing in the bottom half of the table and both offered 4-2-4 formations and Long Ball tactics for their meeting at Firhill.  There were a few chances for each side, but both keepers held firm and the players left the pitch looking forward to a nice rest before next season.

There was a little more action at Love Street, where Saint Mirren hosted Queen of the South.  Matthew White made the interesting decision to invest in an increased home advantage and this left the match quite evenly balanced.  Archie Gemmill was booked for simulating death in the first half but nobody actually died in this goalless draw.

Cove Rangers have had an interesting season, surviving an unprecedented fitness crisis which at one point was them with only eleven fit players in the squad.  They were in contention for a playoff spot at the start of today’s match at Kilmarnock, though Sitrling’s draw was to rule that possibility out.  The Killie were quicker off the mark, taking the lead after 14 minutes through Danny Armstrong but the Highlanders fought back strongly with goals in the 27th and 34th minutes to lead 1-2 at the interval.  There were a few scares in the second half, but they held on to their lead and could be promotion contenders next season.

Queens Park and East Stirlingshire finished their seasons with a meeting at Hampden Park, and it very much had an end-of-season feel about it.  There was early action when Nairo Quintana somehow bundled the ball into the Shire’s net but after that things were pretty quiet and both managers will get a chance to regroup and go again ina few weeks time.

Finally, we’ll turn to Deveronvale v. Ayr United at Princess Royal Park where Leon Permentier returned to his favoured Early Cross tactics.  Early cross, and early goals, two in the first three minutes to leave Ayr reeling against the ropes.  But they bounced back and in the 8th minute Roy Syla bent the ball past Gabri Alisson into the top corner to make it 2-1.  There was a lot of action here, not at all an end-of-season battle  and there was another goal before half time with Gabriel Batistuta restoring the Vale=s two goal cushion.  After half time, fatigue, or perhaps apathy, set in and the game drifted quietly to a 3-1 home win.

Summary

Huge congratulations to Jason Dowson for clinching the title by a 13 point margin.  Congratualtions also to Arnold Yzermans, Fran Morillo and Dan Fitzgerald for their promotions and good luck to James White and Roy Rolsten in the playoffs.  Annan’s Mownt Taranaki gets the Golden Boot award and Berwick the Fair Play award.  And good luck to everyone next season!
