The Fifers bid farewell to Scott Mercer today. This stalwart sweeper joined the club as an apprentice back in Season 52 and played 160 times for the club - only twelve players have appeared more often for us. Remarkably, in all that time, he never scored a single goal for the club though he did manage three assists - and five saves in goal, caused probably by my entering some bad orders for a match.
Mercer will be remembered in the club for his refusal to own a mobile phone. He is a neo-luddite rooted firmly in his allotment, reading the Daily Express from the back page forwards. He was once quite adept at curling but, concerned about the influence of new technology on the game, decided that football was more his thing. The internet remains a mystery to him despite his well-meaning children enrolling him on numerous courses and classes. Now a grandfather, he is much loved by his grand-son for his "funny ways", and much feared for his brutal tackles when playing football in the back garden.
We wish Scott all the best for his retirement from football.
